Popular Destinations in Nagoya for Foreigners

If you’re traveling to Japan, or are already visiting, you need to check out Nagoya. It’s a bastion of culture and a different city to visit if you’ve already experienced Tokyo. Here are a few places in Nagoya that are definitely worth checking out.

1.Nagoya Castle Nagoya Castle 2@fungtravels

What better way to start your adventure than going to a castle? For centuries, this castle has been an icon of Nagoya, and for good reason. It represented the beginning of the Edo period, and has persevered since then, even coming back from the ashes when it was burnt down in 1945. It’s a beautiful place, and if you love gardens, you’re in for a treat.

After strolling through a castle, why not check out a shrine? Atsuta-Jingu has a history that dates back for almost two millenniums, making it the oldest destination you’ll see in Nagoya. When you see it, you’ll be back in time during a period of wonder. I enjoyed the beauty of it and it added to my already fun little stroll around the town.

Since you’re at Atsuta Shrine, why not check out another garden? It’s only a few minutes away from Atsua shrine, and it’s the biggest garden in the area. It’s in Shirotri Park, where it’s been crafted to fit the modern person. If you need a pick-me-up, you can even enjoy tea there.

Anyone who is a fan of museums can’t go wrong here. The Nagoya City Science Museum does not fail when it comes to content, including one of the biggest planetariums in the world. Anyone who is a space junkie will be in heaven! It has other amazing simulations, including tornado simulators. I thought it was just going to be another science museum that was good, but needed a bit more. I was wrong. It’s now one of my favorite spots to visit!

As mentioned, Toyota has a lifetime of history, so why not check out the best of the company through an automobile museum? It contains not only Toyotas, but various other vehicles throughout the world and throughout time. You’ll feel like it was the golden age of automobiles, back when they were still called horseless carriages, and any car buff will be drooling at the hundreds of cars they have lined up. I enjoyed every second of it!

Tokugawa Art Museum 2

The Owari Tokugawa family existed for hundreds of years, so they have quite the history to show you. A descendant of the family has donated over 10,000 items from the family, making this a museum you could drown yourself in. You’ll be teleported back in time into a dynasty, and it’s an experience only you can see for yourself. I thought it was incredible to look at all these items and imagine myself as one of the Owari Tokugawas.

This is just the beginning of what Nagoya has to offer. We may have to make another blog post detailing more destinations to visit. But if you’re in Nagoya, or are planning a visit, this is enough to keep you busy for a while. Being one of the industrial capitals of Japan, there is a lot to see, so get on it!
