We’ve certainly covered Yakitori in the past, and now that you know how to behave yourself inside an Izakaya bar it’s time to hit the Yakitori Joints in Shinjuku. There are a lot of establishments to cover so you’ll have plenty to choose from. You may ask what’s the difference between them all, well, per instance some of the restaurants on the list go as far as the Meiji era which was in the 1900s, these places have a well-known tradition and are well known for providing the best chicken skewed meat with a variety of sauces and ingredients added to enrich their rich flavor.
Just behind the Shinjuku Toho Building lies the famous Torimitsu restaurant easily distinguishable due to a large Godzilla head popping out from the building in front of it which is the Toho Cinemas. Once you find this small restaurant you are in for some delicious Yakitori. Torimitsu is very famous for their Izakaya which are innards enriched in the white liver which is made from a special brand of livers known as fatty livers. Also, do try the Tsukune a half raw chicken breast which goes great with wasabi and also white liver. This place has only been established 4 years ago by a young couple and only has 12 seats and it’s not strange that the stock of Yakitori sometimes gets depleted by customers, so make sure you make a reservation first!

Unlike our previous restaurant which has been opened for a couple of years now, Nanbantei Shinjuku has the proud tradition of serving great yakitori for almost four decades, perhaps being the one of the very first yakitori establishments in town, their yakitori is phenomenal but not only that that but their wide selection also includes seafood, vegetables, and bento sets, the meat is grilled using a rare charcoal imported from Japan and the salt used for spicing is actually sea salt giving the flavor an extra nice tropical punch. The art of cooking fresh ingredients over an open flame can be noticed when tasting chicken wings and tsukune.

The Tori-Shige Shinjuku branch is a premium restaurant located in the center of Shinjuku. The current owner comes from a long generation of Chefs who are considered the absolute masters when it comes to serving grilled meat on a skewer stick. What’s amazing about this particular restaurant is that the staff here speaks English so you will have an easier time getting around. What you can order here is unlike any other Yakitori made out of pork and beef and when you consider that it has been prepared by someone whose father and grandfather were masters of the trade you can’t possibly go wrong.

Shinjuku Wine Kitchen is one of those places where you can feel right at home, it’s located just around the corner from the Seibu Shinjuku station making it an easy find. Apart from the fine selection of wine you can try out the yakitori which is plentiful and on the low spectrum of prices so you’ll get to leave with your wallet almost intact, feel free to fill your soup from the pot if you so wish it. Shinjuku Imaiya Honten is in the proximity of the Yotsuya Station Yotsuya and it delivers promises of great chicken yakitori. This one serves Hinai chicken which constitutes one of the ‘’big three’’ when it comes to Japanese chicken breeds. Make note that you will not probably have to make a reservation due to the spacious establishment. The chicken meat used is fried in Dory style which is for comparison much more delicious and cheaper than the chicken type Ka’s taste. If you like Dory style of grilled chicken you’ve come to right place.

The Volga is really a restaurant on its own. Decorated in the style of 1960s Showa Era, where it was inhabited by students in the 1970s years after it was open in 1949. This place attracts a lot of Russian people who together with Japanese people frequent this place very often. The most famous dish served has to be the 5 piece motsu yakitori embellished with a plethora of sauces makes the perfect dinner for people from all walks of life. Banban Shinjuku Honten
So, for now, we covered Izakaya bars at the western and eastern exits. But on the south exit lays an Izakaya bar with something special. The Banban Shinjuku Honten is just 2 minutes away from the station exit and here you can indulge yourself in their famous chicken sukiyaki which is distinctive and can’t be obtained elsewhere. On the entrance, you will be greeted by a sign which says ”charcoal grilles skewers”. Try some sake while you are there with a course dish of Yakitori, truly a place like no other!
