Where to Eat the Best Ramen in Hakata

Hakata is a ward in the city of Fukuoka, but it has a special place in the book of Japanese ramen history. This small ward is home to the famous Hakata ramen, which is known for its savory tonkotsu (pork bone) broth, handmade noodles, and a generous serving of chashu pork on top. This style of ramen is definitely not for the faint of heart, as it is very consistent and heavy on the stomach. However, it is also finger-licking delicious, and should not be missed if you ever happen to visit the place where it originated from. Today, we look at the top ramen bars in Fukuoka that serve Hakata-style ramen.

1. Hakata Ramen Zen

Hakata Ramen Zen is famous for their absurdly cheap ramen. The most basic bowl costs just ¥280, and is rather filling, which can be a real blessing for visitors on a budget. Located in the Tenjin area of the city, it’s also a great place to crash after a night out, and have some satisfying hangover soup. As far as the quality of the food goes, it’s not as bad as you would expect of a ¥280 ramen, but not on par with the ‘gourmet’ places either.

2. Toraya

Toraya is another inexpensive option, perfect for tourists on a budget. The cheapest item on their menu is a bowl of tonkotsu ramen for just ¥300, or just under $3. They have several stores throughout Fukuoka, including one on Watanabe-dori, and are open daily from 11 in the morning up until midnight. They also serve extra toppings and bigger servings of Hakata ramen, and the quality is not bad at all – again, not exactly gourmet, but otherwise excellent.

Much like Ramen Street inside Tokyo station, Ramen Stadium is an area with multiple ramen bars that offer flavors from over Japan, located in the Canal City shopping mall. While the place has a large selection of flavors from other prefectures as well, half of the bars in Ramen Stadium also serve top-notch Hakata style ramen. Each place in Ramen stadium is famous for a certain flavor – but if you’re going for the typical Hakata style, with heavy tonkotsu broth and lots of chashu, try Kagoshima Ramen Tontoro.

4. Kurume Ramen Ippo

Moving on to something that can be considered ‘gourmet’ ramen shops, Kurume Ramen Ippo is a Fukuoka staple. Created by a former Taiho Ramen chef (another very famous ramen place in Kurume), the shop is famous for its heavy and savory tonkotsu broths, as well as thin Hakata style noodles. While it’s definitely not the healthiest or cheapest place on the list, Kurume Ippo serves a delicious bowl of ramen you shouldn’t miss out on if you’re looking for the authentic Hakata flavor.

5. Shin Shin

Shin Shin is another Tenjin staple – the perfect place to crash after a night out in town, especially since it’s open until 3 in the morning. Their specialty is, of course, Hakata ramen, and is the perfect balance of oily and savory you’ll be craving after a night of drinking. They also offer other flavors though – the most famous one (or infamous, shall we say), is their black sesame ramen, with a broth so pungent that not even all ramen enthusiasts can finish a whole bowl.

Hakata ramen is one of the most popular types of ramen in all of Japan – and you can, of course, find samples of it in other big cities like Tokyo and Osaka as well. However, if you’re ever in Fukuoka and want to taste what real Hakata style ramen tastes like, go to one of these places – we guarantee you can’t go wrong with any of them! However, don’t hold back from just popping into the nearest no-name bar in Tenjin either – you might discover a new ramen gem!
